PLS Collaborative

A non-profit research organization, Procedural Learning and Safety Collaborative (PLSC) is focused on improving physician training. As an organization within the healthcare industry, PLSC faced unique challenges when it came to technology — namely, HIPAA privacy and regulatory compliance. AWS Consulting Partner Ibexlabs was called upon to build and maintain one of its flagship programs, SIMPL, a technology that would become a core part of its offerings.

Working with medical data presents many obstacles, ranging from privacy concerns to the need for fast, low-cost solutions for storage, analysis, and transfer. SIMPL, a platform developed by PLSC to compile evaluation data for medical students and faculty, became the main point of focus for Ibexlabs.

The potential for this technology was immediately evident: a transformation of medical learning through cloud-based technologies. With experience in the medical space, Ibexlabs had to account for several potential concerns surrounding HIPAA privacy and government regulations, all while keeping the costs and downtime minimal.

Ibexlabs was able to create a complete infrastructure with capabilities of self-monitoring and maintenance.

AWS Services used:

• AWS Artifact: To establish a Business Association Agreement (BAA) to protect PLSC’s Protected Health Information (PHI).
• Amazon Elastic Beanstalk: To improve the consistency and reliability of the infrastructure while optimizing its administration and management.
• Amazon RDS: For Data backup, storage, and recovery were available through Amazon RDS.

Ibexlabs was able to achieve next-generation monitoring and continuous compliance through its expert knowledge of advanced AWS technologies. Once developed, PLSC’s SIMPL was secure, high-performing, resilient, and cost-effective — everything that PLSC needed to usher in the new age of doctors. AWS made it possible for PLSC to deploy applications with the elasticity and scalability they needed for long-term growth, and the work that Ibexlabs did in the planning stages made it possible for them to move forward without having to worry about infrastructure maintenance.
